They said she walked away. But what really happened to Molly Clarke?
From the bestselling author of All Is Not Forgotten comes a compelling and emotionally powerful story of a daughter's desperate search to find her mother before it's too late.

They called it a "walk away." The car abandoned miles from home. The note found at a nearby hotel. The shattered family. It happens all the time. Women disappear, desperate to start over. But what really happened to Molly Clarke?

The night Molly disappeared began with a storm, running out of gas, and a man offering her a ride to safety. But when the doors lock shut, Molly begins to suspect she has made a terrible mistake.

A new lead brings Molly's daughter, Nicole, back to the small, desolate town where her mother was last seen to renew the desperate search. The locals are sympathetic and eager to help. The innkeeper. The bartender. Even the police. Until secrets begin to reveal themselves and Nicole comes closer to the truth about that night--and the danger surrounding her.

Publishers Weekly Review

At the start of this exemplary psychological thriller from Walker (The Night Before), guilt-ridden Molly Clarke runs out of gas in Hastings, Conn., fives years to the day after the death of her younger daughter, Annie, for which she blames herself. She gets out of her car and starts walking, but never reaches home. Two days later, the Hastings police find a handwritten note Molly left in a hotel room asking her family not to look for her. Two weeks later, 21-year-old Nicole, Molly's older daughter, receives a tip from a woman who claims she saw Molly the day she disappeared getting into a stranger's pickup truck. Despite the strained relationship between Nicole and Molly since Annie's death, Nicole decides to investigate. When she learns of another woman who vanished from Hastings, she tries to determine whether the two disappearances are connected. Chapters from Molly's perspective that reveal her present whereabouts heighten the tension. Distinctive, well-developed characters complement the skillfully paced plot. This moving look at the bond between a mother and her children reinforces Walker's place at the top of the genre. 75,000-copy announced first printing. Agent: Wendy Sherman, Wendy Sherman Assoc. Booklist Review

Walker's latest twisty thriller (after The Night Before, 2019) chronicles a woman's abduction left uninvestigated under the assumption she has done a "walk-away" from a shattered life. On the way home from driving into the countryside to watch her son play football, Molly Clarke runs out of gas and makes the mistake of accepting a ride from a man in a pickup truck. When she is reported missing by her family and the police find a note asking them to just let her go, they do, believing her desperate to escape the never-ending nightmare she has lived since her youngest child died. No one imagines her fate, held captive by a truly warped man in need of companionship for the girl he also holds prisoner. Although the narrative moves along at a steady clip, the reader must endure the 18 days of Molly's torment along with her. For thriller fans willing to ignore the occasional moments of improbability.
