Library Journal Review

International best-selling author Keyes (Lucy Sullivan Is Getting Married) returns with an intricate and evocative story delving into the lives of the many Casey family members. Johnny Casey and his wealthy entrepreneur/family organizer wife Jessie keep all the members of the family connected with regular gatherings. The three brothers--Johnny, Ed, and Liam--and their wives and children mostly get along and lead fairly privileged lives touched with glamour, thanks to Jessie's generosity. Everyone has something worth hiding, though, bubbling beneath the goodwill. At one fateful get-together, brother Ed's wife, Cara, starts spilling far too much truth after suffering a concussion, and the entire family is in for a much-needed unraveling. VERDICT Focusing in depth on different members of the Casey family, Keyes's writing is nuanced and delicate. She maintains humor while handling tough topics. Readers will feel part of the family and at home with the Caseys. Thoroughly absorbing and hard to let go, this novel is Keyes at her best.--Julie Kane, Washington & Lee Lib., Lexington, VA

Publishers Weekly Review

Keyes's comical and engaging outing (after The Break) dissects the breaking point of the Caseys, a close-knit extended family in present-day Ireland. After Cara hits her head at her brother-in-law Johnny's 49th birthday party, she blurts out various secrets that have been plaguing her family, causing a chain reaction to ripple through the guests. Socially conscious, artistic sister-in-law Nell realizes she and Liam--Johnny's immature and shady youngest brother--didn't really know each other before getting hitched. Nell's mutually drawn to her dynamic nephew, Ferdia, Johnny's 22-year-old stepson. Johnny is handsome and charming but insecure. He's married to Jessie, a successful businesswoman with imposter syndrome, and he betrays Jessie's trust by surreptitiously meeting with an old lover with whom he and Jessie used to be close. In the months before the party, Cara struggled with bulimia, and her husband, Ed, the middle brother, threatened to leave Cara if she didn't seek treatment, and Cara, a hotel receptionist, regrets agreeing to look at Jessie's finances, which leave her privy to Jessie's chronic overspending and Johnny's secret. Keyes not only manages to keep this potentially unwieldy cast under control, she delivers a character-based plot that's emotionally honest and resolves in ways that feel authentic. There's a lot going on here, and it all pays off with dividends. (June)

Booklist Review

Keyes' latest covers the extended Casey family. At the center are glamorous Jessie and Johnny, owners of a famous specialty food shop chain based in Ireland.Their marriage was complicated from the start, as Jessie is the widow of Rory, Johnny's best friend. Johnny's brothers, Liam and Ed, are also featured along with their wives. Liam is newly (and impulsively) married to Nell, and they couldn't be a stranger match. Ed is married to sweet Cara, who hides a dark secret that threatens their marriage. The fact is, all of the family members hold secrets of varying consequences, and they all come tumbling out at Johnny's fiftieth birthday party after Cara suffers a concussion and starts spilling everything she knows (which is a lot). Keyes helpfully provides a family tree, and readers will need it. There's an awful lot going on, but Keyes is a master at making the reader feel like a fly on the wall, privy to all kinds of information and juicy secrets. Her fans will be content.
