Booklist Review

The latest novel from popular and prolific British author Lewis (The Girl Who Came Back, 2016) looks at the plight of the working poor and the ravages of crippling debt. The novel's protagonist, Angie Watts, has had a charmed life with a devoted husband, Steve; a welcoming home; and three beloved children. Yet when their oldest gets involved with a bad crowd and becomes addicted to drugs, everything is quickly torn apart. Worse yet, when Steve attempts to intervene to save their son, he is killed. With no life insurance and little savings, Angie is left struggling to hold together what remains of their family. Lewis touches on many of the problems that can derail lives, from addiction to homelessness, hunger, sex trafficking, mental-health challenges, and the shortfalls of an underfunded and overwhelmed social-services system. Some story lines are not as well developed, and the resolution brings everything together a touch too neatly. However, the empathetic characters and the themes of grace and community will move readers.--Aleksandra Walker Copyright 2020 Booklist
