Summary: "The United States and their Allied forces struggle to survive world war with China in this compelling, realistic thriller, the next in the Dan Lenson series. World War III continues in Overthrow, the next novel in the acclaimed series featuring Admiral Dan Lenson as the Allies converge against China, North Korea, and Iran in an explosive series of events. Admiral Lenson leads Operation Rupture, the invasion of South China, in a bid to finally end the war and restore peace. Meanwhile, Captain Cheryl Staurulakis fights to take a radical new "super ship" to sea, though its power and capability may introduce more risk than reward. In Washington, Dan's wife Blair conducts secret negotiations with a rebellious faction in Beijing, hoping to bring an end to the war, but her plans may be foiled by those who want outright revenge on China, not peace with them. In Western China, Teddy Oberg's guerrilla band grows into a major insurgency, and the former SEAL master chief embraces his new role as an Islamic resistance leader. Sergeant Hector Ramos raises the flag of freedom in Taiwan while fighting his own personal demons, and in Seattle, Dan's daughter, Nan Lenson, fights to save the world from a dangerous new epidemic. But as the Allies plot an endgame to the war, the complicated dance of global warfare, on land and at sea, will finally trigger the nuclear Armageddon the entire world has feared for nearly a century"-- Provided by publisher.

Publishers Weekly Review

Poyer's powerful 19th military action thriller featuring U.S. Navy officer Dan Lenson, the fourth focused on a near-future war in the Pacific (after 2018's Precipice), finds Dan in command of Task Force 91 and about to launch operation Rupture, the first attempt by the U.S. and its allies to seize Chinese territory. After three years of conflict, political support is waning, strikes and riots are everywhere, and money for the war is drying up, as are ships, troops, and resolve, but China is on the ropes as well. Though Dan's story is primary, other regular characters continue story lines that are equally riveting and important to the overall plot. Blair Titus, Dan's wife, now undersecretary of defense, struggles with strategy and the war's political side; Sgt. Hector Ramos continues his never-ending infantry battle against the mainland Chinese invaders of Taiwan; and in western China, SEAL Teddy Oberg is organizing and training insurgents for one last mission that may win the war. Horatio Hornblower fans won't want to miss the latest chapter in this stirring saga. (Dec.)

Booklist Review

The latest in Poyer's Dan Lenson series continues immediately after the events chronicled in Deep War (2018) and finds the admiral in dire straits. The war against China and North Korea continues to rage, and, whether inciting a revolution in the combatants' home countries or trying to negotiate a truce, the U.S. and its allies are desperate to end the conflict. What seemed at first to be a small fight, easy to end quickly, has grown into something else entirely, with the threat of nuclear warfare now in the forefront. Poyer remains a master at writing about naval warfare and making complex military tactics accessible to all readers. Since this novel supplies little backstory, it will be difficult for newbies to connect the dots at various points in the narrative. Fans, however, will continue to enjoy the ride and will want to get their hands on the next one quickly. Like a true serial novel, this installment ends with plenty more story to tell.--Jeff Ayers Copyright 2019 Booklist
