Booklist Review

Diamonds manages to salvage his drugs and money from the waters of Katrina and build a new empire in New York City. Pearl is the daughter of a strict parent, crime lord Big Stone. She is trying to hold onto her position as queen bee at her high school while answering to Knowledge, her dad's assistant, who takes her to task for getting into fights. Diamonds bolsters his reputation when he kills another crime lord in the city and meets Pearl at a bar when he is out celebrating. They are drawn to each other despite the danger her father poses. Past and present enemies catch up to Diamonds, and K'wan ends this street-lit romance with a cliff-hanger. While Diamonds' growth as a gangster seems to follow a predictable path, Pearl is surprising in her perceptions of the harmful effects of the family business on her life and friends. Bestselling K'wan creates an interesting cast of minor characters in memorable, vivid scenes that rapidly switch points of view, moving this edgy story along.--Alessio, Amy Copyright 2016 Booklist
