Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:

This illustrated text is a practical and historical guide, designed for visitors around Paris. The late-19th century times that were modern for the Impressionists have distinct resonances today. Behind the seemingly bland bourgeois bliss a certain malaise lingered, a disillusion with the Industrial Revolution which had failed to live up to its promise of everlasting bounty. As our own century draws to a close, we are similarly quick to blame our technocratic society for our ills. Like the inhabitants of fin-de-siecle Paris, we share the same kind of escapist urge for distraction, an urge which the impressionists were instinctively in tune.

Library Journal Review

Julian, author of several books on France, including the recent Pagnol's Provence (Trafalgar Square, 1995), takes us on a tour of areas of Paris associated with the Impressionist painters of the late 19th century. A good introduction to the Impressionist movement and short biographies of the artists set the stage for this unique travel book. The eight chapters on walks and drives through the various sections where artists lived or painted include many reproductions of relevant paintings, maps of walking or driving routes, commentary on sights of interest, and information regarding hotels, museums, restaurants, and tourist offices. Although it is a bit large and heavy for a pocket book, this well-produced guide will be a pleasure for art and Paris lovers. Recommended for all public libraries.‘George M.
