Booklist Review

Plus-size historical researcher Phoebe Blair is contacted by super-wealthy Armitage Gallier, who wants help researching a girlie card featuring Evelyn Cross. Evelyn, a legendary and big-bodied vaudeville star, mysteriously disappeared in 1897. This unique story involves two time lines and three romances--one in the 1890s, one contemporary, and one that might have been. Armitage's Fifth Avenue mansion houses a treasure trove of historical family valuables. Thomas Gallier, a wealthy foreigner, makes a splash in 1890s New York. He sets out to build a pleasure palace that will be grander, more beautiful, and more exciting than anything seen in New York up to that time. The star he finds to headline the entertainment is Evelyn Cross. Readers will be fascinated by the excesses of the gilded age as societal norms swung from bawdy entertainment and lush body size to thin and prim at the end of the nineteenth century. Not a traditional romance, this memorable tale bounces between then and now, with interjections of Phoebe's take on things.
