Kirkus Book Review

Latina superheroes shine in two action-packed stories. After the traumatic disappearance of her mother, Alicia is recruited by a secretive vigilante group called Las Adelitas, who are determined to end the wave of disappearances and murders targeting women in their community. Nicknamed "Jalisco" by one of the Adelitas, Alicia must learn to fight, using her skills as a traditional folklórico dancer to defend herself. The story takes inspiration from Mexican culture and history, including the legend of Malinche and the women soldiers of the Mexican Revolution. In the second story, tensions rise in the fictional border town of Wexo as a high-stakes political race unfolds. Santa becomes involved in supporting La Politica, a candidate running against Illena Chavez-Estevez, better known as ICE. To stand against ICE and her followers, who believe in their own racial superiority, Santa must draw on the lessons her mother taught her before she died. Both stories tackle difficult topics such as colorism, eugenics, femicide, and racism. While the messaging isn't subtle, the narratives remain engaging and fast-paced. The vibrant, dynamic illustrations bring each character's strength and emotion to life. Latinas are portrayed as strong and passionate in their pursuit of justice, and the storylines are both relevant and hopeful. A bold and compelling tribute to Latina strength, resilience, and the fight for justice.(Graphic fiction. 13-18) Copyright (c) Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.
