Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:

The epic, magical saga of royalty, romance, and violence continues.

A princess. A soldier. A servant. A demon hunter. A thief. When we last saw them, this unlikely group was heading into the Northern Territory of the kingdom of Pitoria, on the run from the sadistic and power-hungry King Aloysius of Brigant. The Smoke Thieves have discovered that demon smoke is not only an illegal drug used for pleasure, but in fact, when taken by children, demon smoke briefly gives its users super-human strength. Aloysius' plan is simple and brutal: kill the demons for their smoke, and use that smoke to build an unstoppable army of children to take over Pitoria, Calidor, and then the rest of the world. The Smoke Thieves are the only ones who understand this plan--but can they stop it? Catherine, Aloysius' daughter, is seen as a traitor from all sides; Tash is heartbroken after the loss of her one friend and sees nothing left for her in the human world; Edyon is wanted for murder; March is carrying the secret of his betrayal of his new love; Ambrose is out for revenge--and all the while, the demons have plans of their own...

King Aloysius discovers that demons' smoke will enable him to build an army of children to help expand his realm and power. Princess Catherine calls upon her allies who can use their unique talents to stop him as he breaches the barriers between worlds and unleashes demons upon the kingdom.

Booklist Review

Little time elapses between the end of The Smoke Thieves (2018) and the start of this second trilogy installment, and readers will need the background of the first book before plunging into this character-filled narrative (don't worry, there's an appended list of the major players). Having fled her deceitful, war-hungry father's attack on her wedding day, Catherine escapes with personal guard Ambrose, young demon-hunter Tash, royal bastard Edyon, and a handful of loyal soldiers. With the Brigantine soldiers in hot pursuit and a fierce winter storm approaching, Catherine makes the controversial call to escape both by entering a demon tunnel. The driving force behind this book's action is a plot by King Aloysius (Catherine's father) to form an unstoppable boy army, fueled by strength-enhancing, purple demon smoke, and Catherine's efforts to warn Pitoria's rulers. Green openly rocks her Medieval-inspired society's traditional views of women's roles, as Catherine assumes more power. Romance, politics, and considerable journeying though only Tash explores the demon world set readers up for what promises to be a juicy, empowering final volume.--Julia Smith Copyright 2019 Booklist

Kirkus Book Review

An unlikely group of heroes must find a way to surviveand save a nation.Picking up immediately after events in The Smoke Thieves (2018), the battle over Rossarb rages, and it quickly becomes clear that the city is lost and the only choice left is to flee to the Northern Plateau, into demon country. Catherine, a princess fighting against her own country; Ambrose, her knight, protector, and possibly more; Edyon, the illegitimate son of a prince; March, a servant with mixed allegiances; and Tash, a scrappy young demon hunter, along with a few loyal soldiers, run for their lives with the Brigantine army on their heels. Entering the demon world leads them into a lair of magic and violence that pushes each toward their own destiny. In this uneven book, some elements feel well thought out, particularly those relating to the construction of the demon world. However, the characters are mostly one-dimensional, making it hard for readers to feel invested in whether they live or die or even in their romances (which lack chemistry). Considering the length, there is very little progress or action, and showing often takes precedence over telling, making certain points feel heavy-handed.A lot of creative ideas that don't quite come together, but fans of the first book will enjoy the continuation of the story.
