What she actually has, however, is a lying husband, two teen daughters who won't confide in her, snooty neighbors, and some grim secrets. Eventually, Debbie decides to take her own advice and be the change she wants to see. As she endeavors to right a few wrongs, her revenge rampage escalates from pranks (and maybe a little playful poisoning) to a deadly turn. McFadden (The Intruder) crafts an intense, intricate suspense novel about marriage, motherhood, and what hides behind the mask of perfection. Narrators Whelan, January LaVoy, and Scott Brick form an expressive, engaging trio. Whelan presents the bulk of the plot-driven narrative, reading Debbie's first-person perspective and her increasingly unhinged advice columns. Now, almost 30 years later, the stay-at-home wife and mother of two uses her considerable genius to keep the Mullens' Hingham, Massachusetts, household functioning "like a well-oiled machine." In her spare time, Debbie also gardens and shares "the fruits of [her] wisdom" with neighbors via the weekly advice column she writes forHingham Household, a local "family-oriented" newspaper. Though Debbie is proud of her husband and teen daughters' accomplishments, her own life sometimes feels a bit empty. As such, she's both honored and excited whenHome Gardening magazine selects her backyard to feature in their next issue. Then, at the last minute, the publication decides to go in a different direction and instead spotlights the roses of her arch rival.
