Summary: "New York Times bestselling author Kelley Armstrong continues the atmospheric Haven's Rock series as Casey Duncan investigates a threat to their off-the-grid Yukon town. Detective Casey Duncan and her husband, Sheriff Eric Dalton, are entering a new chapter of life as parents to their six-month-old baby. Their family is hidden away in the sanctuary town of Haven's Rock where they can live safe and private lives. But when they encounter hikers too close to the borders of Haven's Rock, they realize they're in danger of being exposed. When they find one of the hikers dead the next day, they realize that their paranoia was justified, but they're no closer to finding out who these people were and what they were doing in the vicinity of Haven's Rock. Only by tracing the hikers' movements, as well as examining the recent behavior of their closest neighbors, the workers of a secretive mining camp, will they be able to figure out where the threat is coming from and shut it down. Otherwise, the lives of everyone in Haven's Rock--and their safe, secure new existence--are at risk"-- Provided by publisher.

Library Journal Review

After Cold as Hell, Armstrong returns to Haven's Rock, an off-the-grid town deep in the Yukon, where people come to hide away from the world and live quietly. Detective Casey Duncan and her husband, Sheriff Eric Dalton, pride themselves on keeping the residents and their infant daughter safe. When they encounter Blake and Gretchen, a couple claiming to be lost hikers, Casey and Eric offer help but are careful to maintain their anonymity. The following day, Blake is found dead, prompting Casey and Eric to confirm he was murdered and not merely killed by a grizzly bear. As they search for Gretchen, they have even more questions. Was the couple telling the truth about being lost, are they spies from a rival settlement, or are they connected to the illegal mining camp nearby? Realizing that Haven's Rock and its inhabitants are at risk, Casey and Eric enforce lockdown procedures, which increases tensions among the residents. Following tips that a new neighbor is breaking town rules, they discover that Blake's murder and Gretchen's disappearance are connected to activity at the mine. VERDICT Armstrong delivers another fast-paced thriller in which the landscape is just as deadly as its human inhabitants.--Linsey Milillo

Booklist Review

In the fourth installment of the Haven's Rock series (itself a spinoff of the very popular Rockton series), Casey Dalton and her husband Eric are concerned when they spot some strangers approaching the outskirts of town. Haven's Rock is tucked away in the forests of the Yukon, a hidden sanctuary to its residents, and protecting the secrecy of the town is Casey and Eric's primary responsibility. So the presence of strangers is no small deal. And when one of them turns up dead, Casey and Eric realize there is a clear and present danger. They have no way of knowing, though, what nasty secrets they're about to uncover. Featuring familiar characters from the Rockton novels and an intriguing new setting, the Haven's Rock series is shaping up to be not merely a good sequel series but a powerful and compelling saga in its own right.

Kirkus Book Review

Even the birth of their child can't slow down Haven's Rock's sheriff and his detective wife. While walking in the woods outside their off-the-radar community together with their 6-month-old daughter in tow, Casey Butler and Eric Dalton meet Blake and Gretchen--two hikers from Whitehorse who've come to enjoy the beauty of the Yukon wilderness. Blake is in pain from an ankle he twisted in a fall, but they're reluctant to cut their adventure short. So after first-aid-trained Casey makes a cursory examination of Blake's injury, he and Gretchen announce their plans to soldier on and camp that night in a spot Casey recommends. Casey and Eric have their doubts about the couple's story, since few hikers are bold enough to test the isolated Yukon stretch where they've established Haven's Rock, a sanctuary for people who are in so much trouble that they need to vanish from the face of the earth. On the way home, they discuss the hikers, wondering whether they might be spies from Rockton, an earlier off-the-grid sanctuary settlement, or from the nearby mining camp. The next day they return to the trail where they met the hikers and discover Blake's body. But Gretchen is nowhere to be found. Did she kill her husband? Or is she in danger from whomever did? As Haven's Rock's only detective, it falls to Casey to crack this case. Not to worry, though: The offbeat and multitalented residents have her back, taking turns watching her daughter while she makes increasingly dangerous forays into the wilderness in search of answers. The latest from Haven's Rock boasts quirky characters, outdoor adventure, and a knotty puzzle neatly wound up. Copyright (c) Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.
